2 Timothy 3:15 -17
“And that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
You are not equipped without the Word!
With the word dwelling richly in you (Colossians 3:16) you are fully equipped for every good work. (2Tim. 3:17)
Isaiah 5:13 says: “Therefore my people have gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge.”
Colossians 2 warns us in verse eight, “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ”
Where does a person gain the kind knowledge to keep them from going into some kind of captivity?
In the book of Colossians, chapter 2 verse 3 we are told that in Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
Refer back to 2 Timothy 3:15:
“The sacred writings… Have the power to make you wise and lead you to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”From the NEB
What kinds of things are “captivity”?
-Physical bondage and slavery (like Israel experienced time and again)
– emotional bondage and slavery
– mental bondage and slavery
Fear, anger, unforgiveness, insecurity, false security
– all manner of addictions
Colossians 19 says, ….”we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God…”
I’ve concluded that I require daily manna and people to pray for me so that the knowledge of God doesn’t escape me. I want it! I want to be wise, fruitful and fully equipped for every good work. I do!
Isaiah said in chapter 34 verse 16, Seek ye out the book of the Lord, and read….”
The prophet Jeremiah said, “when Your words came, I ate them; and they were my joy and my hearts’s delight.”
Psalm 119: 49 says: ” remember the word to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to hope.”
“You have set Your word above all Your name” states Psalm 138:2
And here’s why:
“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 NIV
The Word is Jesus in Writing.
“The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any double -edged sword. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit.” Hebrews 4:12
And by Jesus, Colossians 1:16 says, “All things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. Verse 17 says, “and He is before all things and in Him all things consist.”
That impresses the need in me for the power of the Word in my life beyond a shadow of doubt. If The Word became flesh and dwelt among us- if Jesus is the Word and by Him all (ALL) things consist, and I believe this to be true- then I need Him! I need the Word.
Paul declared in Acts 20:27 “For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.”
( a steady diet of the whole Bible is important. Not bits and pieces to suit your preferences or parts that support what you already have chosen to believe but the whole enchilada so-to- speak)
Amos 8:11 has a startling bit of information but if you think carefully you’ll see it coming:
“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord GOD, “when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.”
Have you read about the time coming (I think it’s here) when people won’t tolerate sound teaching but only want to hear what pleases them? The Bible says it this way:
“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” Paul warns his son in the faith Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:3.
And I say please don’t let that be me Lord!
Paul told us in verse 32 of Acts chapter 20, “So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”
What did Paul say is able to build you up and give you an inheritance? The word of God’s grace!
In Colossians 3 we read in verse 10, that we have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.
We know we put on that knowledge by setting our minds on things above, not on things on the earth. (Col.3)
So we must renew our minds. And how do we renew our minds? ( Romans 12:2) We read the Word -we bathe our minds in the Word of God. we let it dwell richly in us. (Col.)
We have everything to gain by pursuing the word of God, prioritizing it, studying and committing it to memory- teaching it. The Bible invites us to “taste and see that the Lord is good.” Psalm 34:8
It’s my intention to have a steady diet of the scriptures so I will develop a taste for truth and righteousness and love. I want to be fully equipped for every good work the Lord has planned for me, because I don’t want to miss a single thing!
